Academic Skills Assessment

Your child may be having difficulty processing and integrating information. Often this struggle is not obvious because both children and adults can develop compensation skills to cope with their learning struggles. However, poor reading comprehension or problems staying focused are frequently symptoms of an individual’s inability to process information in a timely fashion.

At The Ecumenical Center, we can distinguish if your child is truly having difficulty processing information. With the right tests your child can have their specific needs met at school in the form of 504 accommodations. Sometimes learning difficulties are not readily apparent until adolescence or even adulthood when the complexity of information becomes greater than the individual’s ability to compensate. Some 44% of parents who noticed their child exhibiting signs of difficulty with learning waited a year or more before acknowledging that their child might have a serious problem. Since many of tomorrows opportunities depend on what is learned in school today, having your child assessed earlier rather than later makes for a lifetime of faster, easier learning.

Frequently Used Tests for Child and Adolescent Academic Assessment:

Cognitive/Intellectual Tests:

Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV)

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition (WISC-V)

Wechsler Memory Scale – Fourth Edition (WMS-IV) (16 yr and above)

Academic/Achievement Tests:

Wechsler Individual Achievement Tests – Third Edition (WIAT-III)

Academic Skills Assessment for Gifted & Talented Programs*

Many schools have lengthy waiting lists for testing services, so consideration of academic testing at The Center to help get your student in the right class, in the right program and on the right track, may be a very sound decision for long term success.

Have you noticed that your child is particularly idealistic or a perfectionist? Does he or she find certain subjects or concepts very simplistic while his or her peers seem to struggle to grasp even the basics? If the answer is “yes”, your child may possess the requisite abilities to be eligible for Gifted and Talented (GT) classes. GT students are children who perform at (or exhibit potential for performing at) an extraordinarily high level of achievement. They typically excel in one or more of the following areas: overall intelligence, creative thinking, specific academic abilities, visual/performing arts, and leadership.

Because GT students usually become bored with their grade-level work, most school place these bright youth in advanced programs so that they can fulfill their full academic potential. If your school district has a waiting list for advanced-placement testing, consider testing at The Center to get your child in the right class for their capabilities.

The Center for Adult Academic Testing*

Adults often find themselves challenged by new learning opportunities, e.g., returning to college or university after a break, and then finding the way laden with difficulties. New job training may present similar challenges, as well. Using academic testing to assess areas of strengths and weaknesses can assist the individual in making the most appropriate choices, and when necessary helping to target remedial strategies for success.

Cognitive/Intellectual Tests:

Wechsler Memory Scale – Fourth Edition (WMS-IV)

Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth Edition (WAIS IV)
